WAR ON AIDS
Established in 1997
Aids Prevention Education Programmes in Southern Africa
We go to schools and perform a theatrical show on HIV/Aids Prevention.
We answer all the questions in an informed, appropriate and responsible way.
We also teach students how to protect themselves against HIV and AIDS.
All our actors are qualified HIV/Aids counsellors.
The show is done at no cost to the students.
Sponsorships and donations are therefore KEY.

Costs involved
War On Aids travels to the schools and performs at no cost to the pupils.
It is for this reason that we need contributions.
Our cost per pupil works out to $1 per child.
$1 might not sound much, but the majority of children cannot afford it.
Thus we don’t charge at all.

A Brief History
War On Aids is a registered non-profit organization in South Africa (045-175 NPO).
and has been teaching AIDS prevention since 1997.
To date over 200 000 children have seen the show.

In 1998 the organization had the honour to performing for the Office of President Mandela
at Tuinhuis, Parliament, Cape Town, South Africa.
The show was attended by the Attorney General and all the staff from the President Mandela's office.
The funds received for this performance sponsored shows for 5 additional schools.

We have so far performed at over 200 schools, to over 200 000 children from grade 1 through to grade 12.
“Very good and informative”, “absolutely brilliant”, and my favourite from the principal of Chrystal High School: “the most educational hour we have ever had at this school”
We have also performed at clinics, community centres, prisons, factories and at schools festivals.

Supporting Young PDI Actors
We use actors that have just qualified from the New Africa Theatre Association drama school (NATA).
Being part of a project like War On Aids gives them a very good foundation and a comfortable bridging experience into the professional acting world.
NATA is a NPO that provides Drama training for young people from marginalised communities that previously did not have access to any formalised training.
The actors go on a comprehensive aids counsellor training course at qualified aids training institutions such as ATICC.
This qualifies the cast to answer questions, impart knowledge and give advice concerning aids.
This also gives them more opportunities after they leave the project to find employment with other NPO's with AIDS focus.

Reporting and Accountability
We maintain a strict and respected policy of transparency and financial accountability.
Regular reports on the use of funds are provided to donors.
War on Aids is registered as a Non-Profit Organisation in terms of the Non-Profit Organisation Act of 1997 (South Africa) Reg No: 045175 NPO
War on Aids was registered as a NPO on the 11th November 2005.
The main objective of the organisation is to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and education to schools.
The financial statements are prepared in accordance with South African Statements of Generally Accepted Accounting Practice and the Companies Act of South Africa, No 71 of 1973.

The War ON AIDS Play
The pupils are treated to an hour long play that deals with all the most relevant issues regarding the prevention of HIV Aids.
What it is, how it works and how to protect yourself from it.
The play is highly entertaining and informative. ‘It speaks to them on their own level’.
The style of performance borrows from Comedia del arte, slapstick, animation and also very serious drama.

Lorenso and his band has a hit single and are touring the countryside. There are Bubu his girlfriend on backing vocals, Ding-dong the drummer, Jack the bass-man and Knuki….the new girl in the band, also on backing vocals.
We see them at a time of sexual awakening and how they deal with all the pressures and myths.
Lorenso wants it now! Bubu wants to wait and Knuki doesn’t mind at all.
Ding-dong thinks he is a man and that AIDS is an old wives tale.
And then there is Jack, he knows what’s going on.

The play gets interrupted by various (prevention information) "commercial" breaks.
They highlight important aspects concerning the prevention of HIV AIDS.

After Lorenso finds out that he is HIV positive, we travel into his body to see how the virus actually works.
In a hilarious scene we see Major T Whitebloodcell and his troops defeat a flu virus….
But then enters HIV Aidsvirus and nothing will ever be the same again….
After a great battle Major T is defeated and HIV Aidsvirus invites all his cronies to spend some time in Lorenzo’s body,
with no defensive systems to stop their party….

It’s not all doom and gloom, we do rewind the play, up to the point where things started to go wrong,
and then we make them right.
We emphasize the need to protect ourselves with knowledge and common sense.
After all Everybody deserves a happy ending..
Questions and answers

After the play there is at least an hour for the students to ask questions concerning HIV and AIDS.
Where needed, the cast will translate the answers into the pupils’ mother tongue.
The cast is made up of six actors and a company manager/driver/sound operator.
One actors is a seasoned professional, and the other 5 are graduates from N.A.T.A. and other PDI actor training institutions, entering into the professional world.
The actors go on a comprehensive AIDS counsellor training course at a qualified aids training institution such as ATICC.
This qualifies the cast to answer questions, impart knowledge and give advice concerning aids.
The Q and A session usually lasts about 40mins to over an hour.

Handprints

Every pupils now has a chance to do a handprint with finger-paint on a pre-arranged wall, floor, or on canvass.
This handprint becomes the persons pledge to join in the fight against aids.
It is also a physical manifestation that can be seen on a daily basis,
“that is my hand”.

Handouts

Every audience member receives a handout.
This contains vital information, addresses and telephone numbers, a War On Aids balloon and a few fun things.
We also give handouts to the teachers with worksheets for follow up and recall.

In Conclusion
It has been found that there is nothing like Live Theatre to capture the imagination of an audience member. Recall last into years.
It is necessary to revisit schools after 3-5 years due to students moving on and new ones coming in.
One show can cover about a Million students every 5 years.
Ultimately several shows need to be on the road at one time to get to all the children of South and Southern Africa, and get them educated on how to prevent themselves from getting AIDS.
The Comic
We are working on a 'comic' that will become our main handout.
The comic will be a 40 page A5 booklet with the War On Aids story in cartoon form.
This also gives the opportunity to give more detailed information on issues touched on in the show, some statistics, extra information and contact numbers of relevant organisations for further support if needed.
In a way it is simmilar to having a program of a theatre show, you can show your parents what you saw and it is also a reminder of what you saw.
We have a very hip young cartoonist working on the comic and are very exited by it.
We will also do information posters for classrooms based on the play.

The comic will also allow us to sell "advertising" to companies and corporates that wants to sponsor War On Aids.
So if you want to "buy" a page please contact us.
